Why your dashboard can’t tell you why

Charts show that a number moved. Here is what it takes to explain the cause.

Every product team has a dashboard. Few teams have a habit of reading it, and fewer still can say why a line bent last Tuesday.

A chart answers what, not why

A chart compresses a lot of events into a single line. That is useful for spotting a change, but the cause usually lives in a segment the chart averages away.

To explain a move, you need to compare the metric against its own normal, split it by the dimensions that matter and check what shipped around the same time.

That is the work Alidade does every hour, so your team can start from the answer.
